Duvel

Duvel is the iconic, blond, abbey ale from Belgium. Meaning ‘Devil’ in Flemish, Duvel is a fiendishly drinkable 8.5% abv. It was first brewed in 1923.

Its shimmering lemon colouring suggests it’s a lager; but it’s certainly not. It is an ale, combining structure, complexity and power inside a delicate satin glove. Its herbal hop aromas and crisp alcohol-sweet flavours have established Duvel both as an aperitif and as a partner for food.

Duvel’s bespoke glassware has the letter ‘D’ for devil engraved into it. This nucleation releases CO 2 bubbles towards the surface, which helps maintain Duvel’s already towering head. Duvel is a bottle-conditioned, un-pasteurised beer and this, together with its intense hop infusion, contributes to the wave-like head.

Duvel is the best-selling product of Duvel Moortgat.

Duvel Green 6.8% abv, draught

Duvel Green the 6.8% draught version was created in the sixties for the ‘Gentse Feesten’, Europe’s most important open-air festival, that was looking for a lighter beer at the time. Green Duvel is still available in the core region around the brewery as well as in a number of select hotel and catering outlets in Brussels.

Duvel Triple Hopped, 11.5%, limited ed

Duvel Moortagt broke the £10 barrier for a bottle of beer by launching limited offering of 1500 bottles of ‘Duvel Triple Hop’ on 1 st August 2007. This beer uses three different hops, added at different stages of the brew: Czech Saaz (dry spice), Styrian Golding (oily lemon/orange) and American Amarillo (sweet orange and fruit salad). So this is a supremely hoppy beer, based on the great Duvel’s own recipe (8.5%abv) but to a higher abv giving even more intensity of flavour and a richer aroma.

With a use by date of July 2010, this is a beer whose flavours will develop in a cellar for at least two years or beyond.
