Back to Marstons Beer Company
Jennings Brewery, Lake District
The Company was established in 1828, when local farmer John Jennings, whose father was a maltster, started brewing in the pretty Lake District village of Lorton, between Keswick and Cockermouth in Cumberland.
By 1874, the Company had moved to its present idyllic location, in the historic market town of Cockermouth, in the shadow of Cockermouth Castle, at the point where the rivers Cocker and Derwent merge.
Today, pure Lakeland water is still used for the brewing, drawn from the brewery’s own well, and only the finest ingredients are added. These include Maris Otter barley malts grown in Norfolk; Golding hops from Kent and Fuggles hops from Herefordshire.
Cumberland Ale 4.2% ABV (4.0% cask)
A superb golden ale, brewed with Maris Otter barley malts and using only the finest English aromatic hops. Cumberland Ale has a fine hop character combined with firm, sweet malts, making this a great refresher and a great partner for traditional English foods.
Sneck Lifter 5.1% ABV
A favourite of television’s James May*, this dark beer has a reddish tinge, derived from the use of coloured malts. It is a perfectly balanced brew, using specially formulated brewing sugars and English aromatic hops. A strong, satisfying ale, wonderfully warming and full of complex flavours, creating an intriguing brew of great character. (* Radio Five Live 06.01.08)
Cocker Hoop 4.6% ABV
An award-winning golden bitter from 100% malted barley, with Styrian Golding hops added at different stages to give a lemon-lime hop flavour and aroma. This is a bitter beer of great character, appealing to beer drinkers who appreciate fresh fruit flavours, character and style.
