Liefmans

Since 1679, Liefmans has been one of the cult breweries of the great Belgian beer country. Liefmans distinctive flavours derive from the process of mixed fermentation, in open vessels, a blending of young and old beers and bottle-aging in the cellars at Oudenaarde.

Liefmans is blended beer. The origin of the blending was to preserve the beer, brewed in winter, for the hot summer (before decent refrigeration was invented). Liefmans is brewed from pale, dark and roasted malts. After fermentation for one week, the beer matures for four to eight months ( one year for Kriek). Older beers are blended with fresher, sweeter, “new” beer to enliven its flavour. The Masterpiece of blending is their Liefmans Goudenband, 8% sour brown ale.

Liefmans Kriek 6% abv

Liefmans Kriek starts with Liefmans old brown beer which is macerated with fresh whole cherries in shallow, horizontal tanks (every 100 litre brown beer holds 13 kg cherries). Then it matures for about 1 year, afterwards it is blended with both Oud Bruin and Goudenband of different ages. The result is a well balanced sour and sweet Kriek of great complexity.

Liefmans Framboos 4.5% abv

Liefmans Framboos starts with Old Brown and Goudenband to which fresh crushed raspberry juice is added. The result is a delicate beer with a soft but intense fruit perfume.

Liefmans Goudenband8% abv

Liefmans Goudenband is a brown beer of high fermentation, brewed with special malts. This beer will mature for 4 to 8 months in the cellars. The taste of this typical provision beer evolves positively over time.
